How do I find out who owns my domain?

Look it up. ICANN, the group that oversees domain names, runs a free lookup at lookup.icann.org. Type in your website address and it shows which company your domain is registered with and when it expires. Owner details are often hidden for privacy, so the next step is logging in to that company's account. If you can't, or the account belongs to someone else, that's the problem to fix first.

What happens when a domain expires?

It doesn't vanish the next morning, but it goes downhill fast. Under ICANN's rules, this is what happens:

  1. Your registrar has to send at least two reminders, about a month before and about a week before the expiration date.
  2. After it expires, some registrars give you a grace period of up to 45 days to renew, often for an extra fee.
  3. Before the domain is deleted, the registrar can shut it off for up to 8 days. Your website and your email stop working.
  4. After it's deleted, there's a 30-day window to restore it, usually for a fee.
  5. After that, anyone can buy it, including a competitor or someone who resells expired domains.

The reminders go to whatever email is on the account. If that's an old web designer's email or an address you don't check, you'll never see them.

What happens if someone else buys my expired domain?

They control it. People watch for expired business domains and buy them up. Some resell them to the original owner for much more than a renewal costs. Some point them at ads. Either way, every customer who types your old address, clicks an old link, or emails you at the old domain ends up somewhere you don't control. Your Google profile can end up linking to a stranger's website.

My old web designer has my domain. How do I get it back?

Start by asking them to move it to an account in your name. Many will, because it's your business name. If they won't, or you can't reach them, the registrar has its own process for proving you're the rightful owner. It can be slow, but it's worth it. OakSerp can help you look up where the domain is and walk you through either route.

What's included in domain registration and management?

You'll get a timeline with your quote. Moving a domain between registrars can take several days on the registrars' end.

What you'll need to have ready

Who this isn't for

People buying up lots of domains to resell, or businesses that want dozens of extra domains pointing at one site. One good domain, in your name, set to renew, is what a local business needs.

What about my email?

Once your domain is safely in your name, it can carry your email too, like you@yourbusiness.com. That's a separate setup, and it needs the right DNS records or your mail ends up in spam. It's covered on professional email setup.

Questions about domains

Do I need a .com, or is .net or .biz fine?

Get the .com if you can. It's what most people type without thinking. If someone else already has it, a short .com with your town or trade in it usually beats a different ending.

Can I keep my domain if I switch web designers?

Yes, as long as it's registered in your name. Your domain should never be tied to whoever builds your site.

What's DNS?

DNS is the set of settings that tells the internet where your website lives and where your email goes. When it's set up wrong, your site won't load or your email won't arrive, even though the domain itself is fine.

Someone bought my old domain after it expired. Can I get it back?

Sometimes, if the new owner will sell it, but it can cost a lot and there's no guarantee. That's why keeping it on auto-renew with a working card matters so much.

Domains fall under OakSerp's computer support and services, along with business email. The renewal is a small yearly bill. Missing it can take your website, your email, and the link on your Google profile offline on the same day.
